How is a spermatozoon?

GENETIC
COFFEE Flattened, the head holds the genetic material. The nucleus is the main component, where the 23 paternal chromosomes are deposited, which will transmit their DNA to the future baby (if an egg is fertilized, of course)

NANOCAMINIS
The spermatozoon is surrounded by the plasma membrane, which protects it from the external environment. At fertilization, the part of the membrane covering the head breaks, allowing the acrosome enzymes (see below) to take action  

CORROSIVE ENZYMES
In the form of a hood, the acrosome stores thousands of enzymes. At the time of fertilization, they are released and dissolve the egg wall, allowing the chromosomes to reach the female gamete’s nucleus

2. INTERMEDIATE PART
Dimension: 5 μm in length

ENERGY SOURCE
Mitochondria are the house of power. Coiled in the shape of a spiral around the central filament, they produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the fuel used by the  sperm  to travel through the genital system

3. TAIL
Dimension: 50 μm in length

PROPULSOR SYSTEM
Also called flagellum, the tail is composed of dense fibers formed from the neck, region between the head and the intermediate piece. With sinuous movements, similar to those of a snake, the tail is responsible for the displacement of the spermatozoid 

  • 90% of ejaculated spermatozoa have defects, such as double head and multiple tails
