You have barely discovered that you are pregnant, or are still scheduling to have children, and you already receive a number of recommendations – such as taking a maternal vitamin supplement as soon as possible. These products, found in the pharmacy, gather vitamins such as A, C, D, E and folic acid, and minerals such as iron, zinc and magnesium. However, research published in the journal Drug and Therapeutic Bulletin (UK) claims that pills are not always that essential. According to the article, the only supplements that have sufficient scientific evidence to justify the recommendation to pregnant women are folic acid and vitamin D. “The other types of vitamins and minerals do not need to be ingested in the form of pills by all pregnant women. If nutrition is balanced, the needs are already met, “explains obstetrician Carolina Ambrogini of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and a columnist for CRESCER. She also points out that some women also need to supplement their iron intake, but each case needs to be evaluated.
Research: Common stilt does not transmit zika
Researchers from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC / Fiocruz) study possible reasons for the widespread transmission of the zika virus, the one that causes microcephaly in infants. One of the hypotheses was that, in addition to Aedes aegypti, other types of mosquitoes could be able to infect people.
However, a survey conducted in Rio de Janeiro with Culex quinquefasciatus (the most common mosquito, known as stilt or muriçoca) revealed that the insect is not capable of transmitting zika to humans. The study was conducted from January to March 2016, when scientists collected samples of Culex eggs in four districts of the city.
The eggs were then sent to the laboratory, where they gave birth to the mosquitoes, which were fed with blood infected by zika. In the analysis, no viral particles were identified in the insect’s head or saliva, which shows that the zika cannot complete its life cycle when it is inside the stilt.
For pregnant women, there is the relief of not having to worry about the common stilt.
